Hands Across the Valley
Hands Across The Valley was founded in 1994 when George Altamura learned the Napa Food Bank was nearly out of funds. Shocked by how many in the Valley were going hungry—despite its wealth—he rallied local leaders to take action. They discovered thousands were relying on programs like Meals on Wheels, church kitchens, and community efforts, many operating with little to no federal support.
George launched a campaign to fight hunger in Napa Valley, starting with a fundraiser at Bistro Don Giovanni that drew over 500 guests and community icons like the Coppolas and Steve Young. The event quickly grew, moving the next year to the Coppolas’ Rutherford home and eventually to their winery, where it became a beloved annual celebration.
Since then, Hands Across The Valley has raised over $2 million for Napa’s Safety Net Food programs—bringing the community together to make a real difference.
